Manchester United is trying to resolve Frenkie de Jong impasse

Richard Arnold and John Murtough, two prominent members of Manchester United, have gone to Barcelona to resolve the deadlock surrounding the club’s pursuit of Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The 25-year-old is the top summer transfer target for brand-new boss Erik ten Hag.

However, a legal dispute between De Jong and Barcelona impedes any prospective agreement.

The issue is on De Jong’s pandemic-era earnings that must be paid back over four years.

De Jong postponed collecting the money to assist the struggling Catalan club, and the money was supposed to be reimbursed throughout a new, four-year deal about to go into force.

De Jong is hesitant to go because he believes he is due by Barca.

United has repeatedly emphasized that, should their efforts to capture the former Ajax player fail, they have backup plans.

The eagerness to acquire De Jong is shown by the decision of chief executive Arnold and football director Murtough to travel in for in-person negotiations with Barca executives.

Normal circumstances would have had at least one of them in Thailand for Tuesday’s preseason opener between United and Liverpool.
