England starter Jonny Bairstow came up with a big attack on Tuesday in Pune but missed his 11th ODI hundred by just 6 runs. Bairstow led India’s new bowlers to the cleanup and gave England the opening lead in their pursuit of 318 in the opener of the ODI series.

Jonny Bairstow is among only 4 batters in England to have scored 10 or more hundred ODIs. Test skipper Joe Root tops the list with 16 hundreds, while Eoin Morgan has 13 and former starter Marcus Trescothik has 12.

Bairstow and his opening partners Jason Roy also equaled the record of over 100 stands for England. The duo matched Eoin Morgan and Joe Root’s tally of more than 12 hundred bleachers in the 50-plus format when they posted 135 runs to the opening wicket on Tuesday.

Jonny Baristow was in commanding form of striking, attacking young Prasidh Krishna, playing his first international match, and Shardul Thakur in the power play.

Bairstow reached 2 sixes and the same number of limits in an expensive sixth envelope thrown by Krishna. He then led the attack on Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya, knocking the two spinners out of the park with ease. Bairstow had reached 7 sixes and 6 limits before reaching Shardul Thakur in the 25th over.

England ran 89-0 at the end of 10 overs. The 135-race opening stand between Bairstow and Roy helped the visitors get off to a strong start, putting pressure on Virat Kohli’s men. Bairstow was also prepared to play the waiting game as he curbed his attacking instincts after England lost Roy and Ben Stokes in quick succession.

The Bairstow wicket came at the wrong time for England, who were desperate to help in the middle. Englnad was reduced to 176 out of 5 with Shardul Thakur collecting 3 plots and Krishna taking 2.
