Mohamed Salah hints at Egypt's retirement

After their World Cup exit, Mohamed Salah has raised doubts about his future as a member of the Egyptian national team. The Liverpool forward spoke out in support of his team in a video posted by Egypt’s ministry of youth and sport.

He said that he was proud of them, “whether or not I’m here.” On Tuesday, the Pharaohs were defeated by Senegal in a penalty shootout. After their humiliating defeat, Salah addresses his team in the locker room, saying, “I told them yesterday (before the match), that I was proud to have played alongside them and that they are among the most talented I have ever played with.”

“There’s not much to say. But it was an honor to play with you, regardless of whether I’m there.”

Salah’s comments could be taken as an indication that he is ready to quit international football.

The 29-year old began his career in 2011 with the Egyptian national soccer team.

His crowning achievement was scoring the last-moment goal against Congo in the 2017 World Cup qualifiers, which sent Egypt to the 2018 World Cup.

In Tuesday’s shootout with Senegal, Salah blazed a penalty above the crossbar.

The Pharaohs are now out of the running to lose to Senegal for the second time in just two months. They lost to Senegal in February’s Africa Cup of Nations final. This match also saw a penalty shootout.
