Kylian Mbappe rejects Real Madrid, extends deal with PSG till 2025

The French champions revealed that Kylian Mbappe had signed a contract extension with Paris St Germain to keep the France striker bound with the Ligue 1 team until 2025.

“I wanted to announce that I have opted to extend my contract with Paris Saint-Germain, and I am, of course, extremely thrilled. I am certain that I can continue to improve within a club that gives itself all the resources to succeed at the top level,” the 23-year-old said in a club statement.

“I am also extremely glad to be able to continue playing in France, the nation where I was born, grew up and blossomed.”

Mbappe and club president Nasser Al Khelaifi posed clutching a “Mbappe 2025” PSG jersey before the penultimate game of the Ligue 1 season against Metz as the fans roared as Al Khelaifi revealed the news at the Parc des Princes.

The France attacker, whose current contract ends on June 30, had been heavily projected to join Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old, one of the game’s brightest prospects who came into the limelight as a youngster and helped France win the World Cup in 2018, was due to depart on a free transfer when his contract ended at the end of the season.

PSG bought Mbappe from AS Monaco in 2017 in a transaction thought to be approximately 180 million euros, making him the world’s second-most expensive acquisition behind Neymar, who joined PSG from Barcelona for 222 million euros.

Real’s desire to acquire Mbappe last year was rebuffed by the Parisian club, who prepared to lose him on a free transfer this year.

Reports last year indicated the Spanish champions had offered PSG as much as 200 million euros for the Frenchman. PSG had no intention of selling their youthful star to pursue Champions League success.

Still, the French club came woefully short this season as Real made a remarkable second-leg comeback in the last-16 to knock them out of the tournament.
