Manchester City Transfer News: Manchester City have signed Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips

On Monday, Manchester City announced the signing of Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips for 45 million pounds (USD 53 million).

The English international was acquired by City for an initial cost of £42 million, with a further $3 million in possible incentives.

Having committed to Manchester City for six years, Phillips said: “I am delighted to have joined Manchester City.”

After the long-serving Brazilian Fernandinho left the previous season, Guardiola chose Phillips to strengthen his midfield.

City and Phillips agreed in principle in June, and the transfer is now formally complete.

Phillips, who progressed through Leeds’ development systems, joins the club at the Etihad Stadium after spending the previous eight seasons making 235 appearances for his local team.

With an incredible roster and a manager in Pep Guardiola, who is justly regarded as the greatest in the world, City has once again shown why they are the best team in the nation, according to Phillips.

“I am pleased about the thought of playing for Pep, learning from him and his coaching staff, and being a part of such a great team.

“Joining City is a dream come true. They are a world-class club with world-class people and facilities.”

After acquiring attacker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno from Arminia Bielefeld, Phillips is City’s third close-season addition.

The 26-year-old played a significant role in Leeds’ promotion back to the Premier League two years ago after progressing through the club’s development systems.

He later established himself as an England international, playing a role in the team’s last-year run to the European Championship final.

With the Phillips acquisition, City has once again shown their will to defend their Premier League championship after the stunning addition of Haaland.

Phillips’ arrival coincided with City selling Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal and Raheem Sterling’s rumored Chelsea transfer.

Txiki Begiristain, the director of football for Manchester City, said: “We are beyond thrilled to be able to welcome Kalvin to Manchester City.

“He is a player we have long respected, and over the last several seasons, he has shown his incredible talent and brilliance domestically and internationally.

We believe he will be an excellent addition to our team and perfectly complement our style of play.
